PwC recently reported that high youth unemployment is costing the British economy £45bn per year. The proportion of 16 to 24 year olds not in education, employment or training – known as NEETs – is sitting at 17%. PwC’s chief economist John Hawksworth said that more high-quality apprenticeships would help reduce the gap with well-trained young workers.

Two Somerset based companies are working in partnership to address these issues and give young people the opportunity to access work and training. Inspired to Achieve (i2a), an employment social enterprise and subsidiary of Yarlington Housing Group, and Jones Building Group have been working closely with Jones Building Group to support local Yarlington residents into work experience placements and apprenticeships, read the full story here. 

Elsewhere, Coast & Country’s New Directions programme, which is part of the Youth Employment Initiative and funded by the European Social Fund, has helped a local employer take on their first employee just a year after setting up in business.

The New Directions team at Coast & Country works with businesses and young people aged 15 – 29 to source jobs, traineeships, apprenticeships and work placements. Read more about how the team have helped local employers link into Coast & Country’s employment support opportunities here.
