Communities that Work gets backing from Employment Minster at The House of Commons Event
A group of 26 Housing Associations owning over 350,000 properties between them and working in various economic environments across the country produced their independent evaluation of their ‘Providing Talent’ scheme. This scheme offered paid job placements within their organisations to upport 18 – 24 year olds.
Monday 17th June 2013 saw the results of an independent evaluation report ‘Providing Talent’ presented at The House of Commons. This event was supported by Employment Minster, Mark Hoban, National Housing Federation, Chief Executive, David Orr and Members of Parliament, Alison Seabeck MP and Peter Aldous MP.
The Providing Talent projects were carried out in Southampton, Merseyside, Preston and Birmingham. There was also a self employment model in Manchester and Middlesbrough.
The young people had access to temporary jobs, paid work placements, training, and support to find permanent work as well as apprenticeships or full-time training courses at the end of their placement.
The roles they were offered include working with repair teams, on IT and community development projects, administration, housing and in human resource and communications departments.

Kate Shone, Chair of the ‘Give us a chance’ consortium, said: “The impact of the economic downturn on young people is a big concern for us. This vital scheme will help young people avoid the benefit trap and give them a chance to get their foot on the employment ladder.”
David Orr, Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation, said: “Give Us a Chance is Fantastic”
The Centre of Economic & Social Inclusion carried out the evaluation and key findings of the report were:
“positive working relationships emerged that endured through out…”
“formal but open selection processes worked well”
“25 youngsters had completed their temporary paid job (10 of whom had moved into another job immediately)
“Five out of the nine participants on the self employment awareness course had moved into work”
